Former President Jimmy Carter Calls For A Two State Solution From Obama And UN Before Jan 20th

Former president Jimmy Carter blasted his concern today of a disappearing two state solution for Palestine going out the window if immediate action isn’t taken before January 20th.

In this opinion piece published on November 28th in The New York Times Opinion section, Carter calls Obama to step up and take action before his time runs out to make any lasting change.

Shining a spotlight on the Palestinians who have been displaced, Carter writes to draw attention to his opinion that Israel shouldn’t be building more settlements, especially in “Palestinian lands”. Carter points to a declaration Obama made in 2011 that sides with his opinions that “the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines”. Obviously offended by Israels actions, Carter believes a two state solution will bring peace to the conflict, as if former land-for-peace deals ever brought peace to the area.

The Carter Center is pushing for a two-state solution by hosting discussions between Israeli and Palestinian representatives this month. He is calling on the current president to take immediate action before Trump begins his presidency. Here we have another push for the land to be divided before Obama leaves office, and it is by a former president. If there was ever justification to divide the land, it certainly makes it easier when an admired president is on board with the initiative. Once the land is divided, count on the fact we will see immediate judgement as a result of the United States being involved in being a key player in the process.

This was why, in 2009, at the beginning of his first administration, Mr. Obama reaffirmed the crucial elements of the Camp David agreement and Resolution 242 by calling for a complete freeze on the building of settlements, constructed illegally by Israel on Palestinian territory. Later, in 2011, the president made clear that “the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines,” and added, “negotiations should result in two states, with permanent Palestinian borders with Israel, Jordan and Egypt, and permanent Israeli borders with Palestine.”

Today, however, 38 years after Camp David, the commitment to peace is in danger of abrogation. Israel is building more and more settlements, displacing Palestinians and entrenching its occupation of Palestinian lands. Over 4.5 million Palestinians live in these occupied territories, but are not citizens of Israel. Most live largely under Israeli military rule, and do not vote in Israel’s national elections.
